Everyday there are reports of street accidents in newspapers. A city has, no doubt, many advantages. We can travel from one part to another in a few minutes by bus or tram cars. But at times one has to pay dearly for staying in a big city.
I am born and brought up in Calcutta. I have read newspaper reports about street accidents. But I had never seen any accident with my own eyes till the other day.
It was a horrible experience to watch a boy, run over by a bus, and lying in a pool of blood.
It was Sunday. Several boys forgot all about cars and public buses and were playing on the street. A kite fell on the street. All the boys ran to bag the prize.
One boy seized it and danced in joy. A motor bus was coming at a terrific speed. The happy boy was completely smashed.
Some passers-by caught hold of the driver and assaulted him mercilessly. Some set fire to the bus.
Only a small section of sensible men took the injured boy to the Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead. The Police arrived and saved the driver by arresting him.
I was also at, the hospital. The parents of the dead body lay unconscious. He was their only child, the prop of their old age, I returned home, and could not have a wink of sleep.
